Overview

As systems thinkers, we take a thematic approach to investing with Rally Funds. Generally speaking, a thematic approach is forward looking, examining long-term trends and systems and how they might change over time. We aim to invest in companies and funds that are likely to benefit from those trends. We do not have goals around thematic percentages for Rally Funds. Our investment process begins with and is grounded in a holding’s impact thesis not a theme; that said, the thematic approach, as a strong organizational and reporting tool, helps us see a broad picture of portfolio impact and identify possible gaps.

Rally Funds have four themes, with associated target outcomes and a target impact for each themes. The four themes are deeply interconnected and reinforcing.

With natural capital preserved, the earth’s regenerative capacity is maintained.

Target Outcomes:

  • Higher efficiency and resilience to lower end demand on natural capital
  • Sustainable alternatives to shift demand to less resource intensive production and consumption models

2023 Thematic Allocation

Both Rally Funds had strong allocation to each theme; the social equity focus of some private investments in RTIF resulted in its higher allocation as compared to RGEIF. The addition of public debt and private investments to public equities meant there are some impact sub-areas in RTIF that aren’t in RGEIF.

Land Acknowledgement

A note on our relationship with this land and those who have been here much longer than we have

We consider ‘the land Rally Assets is on’ as the whole of this country. Turtle Island. Our office is in Toronto; staff live across the country; currently, around Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. The impact fund managers and product issuers we work with are based throughout the country, as are our clients.

We know this is not our traditional land. Most of us came to Canada very recently, and those whose families came generations ago know that their settler ancestors arrived in a country that had been inhabited for thousands of years by people collectively called Indigenous peoples.

Our staff all have deep personal connections to the land of their heritage and understand how powerfully that connection shapes who they are. Reflecting on that helps us appreciate the horror of the action of settlers and settler governments to sever Indigenous peoples from their lands, their livelihoods, their cultures and more.

Acknowledging the truth of Canada’s difficult Indigenous-settler past, we work today to build Indigenous-settler relationships that heal, nurture and strengthen so that the future is better for us all.
