Custom Impact Portfolios

Your values + our know-how = a portfolio to deliver the impact you want

As a regulated Portfolio Manager, we can build and manage a unique portfolio of investments to target the particular social and environmental impacts that matter to you.

We create custom impact portfolios (CIPs) to deploy a client’s capital towards impact and financial goals. These portfolios cover investments across all asset classes and can be managed on a discretionary or non-discretionary basis.

CIP Service: Design, Build and Manage

Typically, our CIP portfolio management services involves:

  • Portfolio design
  • Portfolio build
  • Portfolio management
PORTFOLIO DESIGN

Where we get to know you.

This stage includes detailed reviews of current portfolios, strategies, policy and governance structures, specific impact investment needs and goals as well as traditional KYC (Know Your Client) questionnaire and KYC discussion. We then create or revise a customized investment policy statement specific to the mandate, which includes financial and impact parameters.

PORTFOLIO BUILD

We maintain a pool of about 150 private impact funds and products. We’re able to use that pool to generate new possible opportunities for clients. Using this pool, our internal research and due diligence teams undertake a screening process to identify investment opportunities that may be suitable for a client’s mandate and targeted impact. From this screening process, our portfolio managers select investments that are best suited for your portfolio and subsequently work closely with our research team to conduct thorough due diligence to ensure the financial, impact, and risk characteristics meet the investment objectives as outlined in your IPS.

Impact investment products can be found across asset classes to meet your portfolio needs, including:

  • Direct public equities
  • Public equity funds
  • Private equity funds
  • Public debt funds
  • Private debt funds
  • Venture capital funds
  • Microfinance funds
  • Real assets funds
PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT

When investment decisions are made, we make the investment, completing the required investment paperwork.

The portfolio management process includes:

  • Operations and administration. We work to ensure assets are custodied, compliance protocols in place and cybersecurity risks reduced.
  • Capital calls and distributions. We manage capital deployment, redemptions, and distributions and where relevant, we facilitate the related wire transfers, working with our client and the custodian(s) as necessary.
  • Ongoing monitoring. We continuously monitor portfolio impact and financial performance. This includes reviewing financial and impact reporting from your investments, and actively participating in investor calls and annual meetings.
  • Stewardship. We engage in stewardship activities across asset classes, including fund manager engagement to ensure strong impact practices and, for public equities, undertaking proxy voting
  • Impact and financial reporting. We provide integrated impact and financial quarterly and annual reports, showing portfolio impact in alignment with our proprietary impact management methodology.
  • Governance and oversight. We work with clients to determine a working arrangement and level of engagement that meets their needs. This includes understanding the role of staff members, committee members, and Board members, and where discretion sits. Typically, we meet with clients quarterly.

It’s an uncommon service

We haven’t found another company offering full-service impact investing portfolio management for public and private impact portfolios on a customized basis:

  • Impact knowledge: Traditional investment services do not include the impact assessment, measurement, management and reporting work that is critical to identify authentically impactful products, and to assessing a product’s impact performance on an ongoing basis.
  • Product-agnostic, free of conflicts: We take a fund-manager and product-agnostic view when it comes to sourcing and selecting new opportunities, ensuring your impact and financial goals drive decision-making.
  • Consolidated reporting, both impact and financial: We place equal emphasis on impact and financials in all portfolio contexts, and thus provide impact reporting alongside financials on a quarterly basis, and deep-dive annual impact reporting.
